Dvořák- New World Melody
In celebration of Dvorák’s birthday, I started my day with his simple, beautiful melody from the New World Symphony. I am reading from the score, so I am having to transpose a little bit. This isn’t too difficult as it is a very regular part of my practice. I will take a simple melody like Ode to Joy or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and transpose it up and down a few key signatures. Often times I don’t know what key I am in, only the note I started on. This kind of practice allows you to get deep into your own sound and playing habits without having to setup and recording equipment. You can clearly hear when you play something incorrect because the song you are playing is so grounded into your ear.
Do your best at learning whatever tune you pick by ear, no sheet music! It’s fun to reverse the process and see if you can transcribe what you are playing and then checking your work to see how close you are!
The benefits of playing by ear are unmeasurable, start with something simple like New World Symphony and work your way up!
